Illustration Fundamentals: Assignments and Materials

#1. Architectural Logo Illustration Assignment: Weeks 1-2

We will render a building in black and white using ink (marker pen) on drawing paper. The objective of this assignment is to create an appealing illustration for a corporate brochure that can be printed in one color. Treat this illustration as a unified graphic design by incorporating a type element. The type element can be the name of the company or the corporate headquarters.

In other words, the illustration should function as a signature element like a logo design that is distinctive and easily recognizable. The illustration dimensions are proportional to 4”x 5” and can be rendered larger at 8”x10 on a sheet of good quality drawing paper.”

DUE: 7.1.10

#2. Dream Home Assignment: Weeks 3-4

We will render an exterior view of a dream home or an interior view of an idealized loft studio apartment in line and tone using ink on drawing paper. The objective of this assignment is to create a dynamic perspective illustration of your dream home. This illustration is an opportunity to explore architectural details that you would like to include in a home.

If you choose the loft apartment idea, consider all the important elements you would like to include and how they would appear in one/two point perspective. If you chose to render an exterior view of a dream house, consider the style of architecture and the features that you want and how they would appear in one/two point perspective.

There is no type element. The illustration dimensions are proportional to 14”x 10 and can be rendered the at this size. This will be a horizontal format. The art can be rendered on drawing paper or illustration board. Use illustration board if you are going to include watercolor washes.

#3. “Stylized” Music CD Illustration Assignment: Weeks 4-6

We will develop a stylized graphic illustration that will be used for the cover and foldout of an album CD. The illustration must be “Decorative” in interpretation meaning stylized elements will be a major aspect of the design. You will choose the music artist or group as the subject. The name of the artist, group, or music album should be a must be designed as part of the illustration.

A layout will provided with crop lines and type areas that you will have to incorporate into your illustration. This illustration will include color as a flat or patterned element. The primary media will be markers, but paint can be used to create the color element.

A copy of each illustration will be made and folded into a working mockup of a CD package. The original art and the assembled CD cover will be mounted separately on black matte board and turned in as a two part final presentation.

The illustration should feature the face of a recognizable celebrity as the main element of the design. The face should be large and dominant and rendered in strong tones of light and shadow. A secondary figure or object should be added to suggest a story element such as a moment of action like an exploding car or gun firing.
The title of the story is “NIGHT GAMES,” and should be included as a major element in the design of the illustration.

MATERIALS LIST: MACA 1040 Illustration Fundamentals

Items with an asterisk will be needed in the first week and the remainder should be purchased by week two.

Many of the items listed can be purchased at Michaels or Office Depot, but some, like French Curves may only be available at an art store like Du-Alls, Rainy Day, or Charette.

*14”x17” DRAWING PAD-(1)
You will need a 14" x 17" Pad of good quality Drawing Paper (Strathmore, Bienfang, or Canson brand recommended).

*LEAD PENCILS-(4)
Two each of HB, and H lead pencils. You can choose to use either the Berol or Steadtler brands. I prefer regular “wood” pencils as opposed to the lead pencil holders but you can use what you are more comfortable with.

*ERASERS-(2)
Two white plastic Mars erasers. No pink Pearl Erasers-they leaves streaks. An electric eraser is excellent
also but not required.

*12” RULER-(1)
A 12” metal ruler is best.

*TRIANGLE-(1)
A 90 or 45 degree plastic triangle will be fine.

*HAND HELD PENCIL SHARPENER-(1)
A small handheld sharpener is best-don’t get an electric pencil shrpener.

*FRENCH CURVE-(1)
A medium size French Curve roughly 10 inches is best. (Sometimes sold in packs of different sizes.

WIDE TIP BLACK PERMANENT MARKERS-(2)
An assortment of 3 or 4 medium tip Sharpies will be used for some assignments. Also, 2 or 3 fine tip Sharpies or Micron (.5 and 1 pt) pens will be needed for a black and white line illustration.

FINE TIP BLACK MARKERS-(3 to 5)
An assortment 3 fine tip Sharpies or Micron Pens (.5 and 1 pt) pens will be needed for a black and white line illustration. You may need to buy more as we progress.

PRISMACOLOR COLORED PENCILS-(3 to 5)
You will need at least three white and 6 black Prismacolor pencils. An electric battery powered pencil sharpener is not required but I do recommend one because it will come in handy. Verithin colored pencils are not recommended because they are too hard and will not build tone as effectively.

TONED PAPER-(2 to 4 sheets)
You will need a couple of sheets of Toned Paper like Artagain or Mi-Tientes Brand for the final assignment and for the second assignment as well. You can but individual sheets when you are ready start each assignment or you can buy the Artagain pad.

SKETCHBOOK-(1)
There are several different kinds of sketchbooks you can get. My only requirement is that the book be no smaller than 8”X10” and no larger than 11”x14” and preferably a ring binder format for easy access to drawings. Strathmore medium surface drawing paper or a similar paper would work well for sketching concepts--no newsprint drawing pads please.

BLACK MATTE BOARD-(1 sheet)
You will one 1 sheet of black matte board for presentations.

WATERCOLOR or ACRYLIC PAINT-(1-3 tubes a Small Paint Brush)
You can wait on this purchase until we reach the Music CD assignment. Color will be an element in this project but may only require one or two tubes of color.

SMALL FLASH DRIVE-(1) optional
You may want to buy an optional 2 GB Flash or Thumb drive for saving reference images you find on the web. We will not have access to  computers or printers during class hours, so plan on printing some reference material from a home printer.
